South Capitol Street is a major street dividing the southeast and southwest quadrants of Washington, D.C. It runs south from the United States Capitol to the Washington-Maryland line. Once it crosses the line, intersecting with Southern Avenue, it becomes Indian Head Highway (Maryland Route 210) at the Eastover Shopping Center, a terminal or transfer point of many bus routes.

North of the Anacostia River, South Capitol Street runs due north-south. Nationals Park, home of the Washington Nationals, is located on South Capitol Street near the Anacostia River. However, after crossing the Anacostia River over the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge, South Capitol Street follows a slightly more winding path as it passes alongside Anacostia Naval Station, Bolling Air Force Base, and then through the southern end of Washington, D.C.

South Capitol Street links with major streets and highways such as Interstate 295, the Suitland Parkway, Atlantic Street, and Martin Luther King Junior Avenue. The section of South Capitol Street between Washington Avenue and the Suitland Parkway is part of the National Highway System. Washington Avenue provides a National Highway System connection between South Capitol Street and Independence Avenue.

Taxation Without Representation Street

The D.C. City Council ceremonially renamed a portion of South Capitol Street "Taxation Without Representation Street" in order to bring attention to the district’s lack of voting rights in Congress. The goal, according to advocates, was to boost awareness by changing the address of Nationals Park.

Capitol South  is an island platformed Washington Metro station in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington, D.C., United States. The station was opened on July 1, 1977, and is operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). Providing service for both the Blue and Orange Lines, the station is also scheduled to be on the Silver Line route, which is expected to start operations in 2013.

The station opened on July 1, 1977. Its opening coincided with the completion of 11.8 miles (19.0 km) of rail between National Airport and RFK Stadium and the opening of the Arlington Cemetery, Crystal City, Eastern Market, Farragut West,Federal Center SW, Federal Triangle, Foggy Bottom–GWU, L'Enfant Plaza, McPherson Square, National Airport, Pentagon, Pentagon City, Potomac Avenue, Rosslyn, Smithsonian and Stadium–Armory stations. Orange Line service to the station began upon the line's opening on November 20, 1978.


Capitol South is located in the south-central section of the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington, D.C. As such, it is surrounded by a wealth of government offices and buildings. Most importantly, it is the closest station to the Capitol Building which holds the Senate and House of Representatives. All three buildings of the Library of Congress are within a quarter-of-a-mile radius of Capitol South as are the Democratic National Committee and Republican National Committee headquarters. The Folger Shakespeare Library, the world's largest collection of printed Shakespearean works is a five minute walk west from the station.

There is only one entrance to the station located on the southwestern corner at the intersection of 1st Street SE and C Street SE. A row of three escalators and a staircase brings passengers to a mezzanine level where they may buy tickets from vending machines and pass through faregates. Once passengers pass through these faregates, a pair of escalators brings passengers onto the platform. There are two elevators for handicapped passengers, one from street level to the mezzanine on the northwestern corner at the intersection of 1st Street SE and D Street SE and another between the mezzanine and platform. Capitol South station utilises an island platform layout with two tracks, D1 and D2. Eastbound trains to New Carrollton or Largo Town Center use track D1 whilst westbound trains to Vienna or Franconia–Springfield use track D2.
